In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it’s easy to let family photos slip through the cracks—especially when it comes to extended family sessions. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned as a photographer, it’s that these moments are worth every bit of effort. Extended family photos capture the connections, the laughter, and the stories that span generations. Today, I’m sharing five reasons why booking an extended family photo session might just be the best decision you make this year.

  1. Multigenerational Love: There’s something truly magical about capturing three—or even four—generations in one frame. From grandparents holding their newest grandchild to sisters huddled together for a silly shot, these photos remind us of the depth and beauty of our family roots. During one session this year, I captured a grandmother surrounded by her children and grandchildren. The joy and pride on her face? Absolutely priceless.
  2. Creating Memories Through the Chaos: Let’s be honest—getting the entire family together isn’t always easy. Coordinating schedules, outfits, and moods can feel like a circus. But trust me, the results are so worth it. In one of my sessions this year, brothers & cousins were running around with these giant sticks. It was chaotic, but that laughter and spontaneity? That’s where the magic happens. Plus, kids are kids - and it's so much more enjoyable when we allow them to be!
  3. Document Your Family Legacy: Extended family sessions aren’t just about the here and now—they’re about preserving a legacy which is what I'm all about! These photos become heirlooms, passed down through generations. One family I worked with had me photograph at their childhood home. A brother pretended he was going to push his sister in the pool! Incorporating those personal touches made the photos even more meaningful. And honestly, what an honor to be welcomed into their space where they made the most memories.
  4. Capture Unique Traditions & Personalities: Every family is unique, and extended family sessions are the perfect opportunity to celebrate that. One of my favorite sessions this year featured a family with two brothers who gave their dad big ol' kisses! They headed to his surprise birthday party after the session. These little details you'll remember just add to your story and make your photos truly one-of-a-kind.
  5. Gather While You Can: Life moves fast, and family dynamics change. Kids grow up, people move, and schedules only get busier. Taking the time to gather for photos is a way to pause and appreciate where your family is right now. At a session around Thanksgiving, it was heartwarming to see everyone, from toddlers to teens to grandparents, coming together. Moments like these are fleeting, and I feel so honored to capture them.

Extended family photo sessions are more than just a picture—they’re a celebration of love, connection, and legacy. Whether it’s been years since your last family photo or you’re considering booking for the first time, now is the perfect time to make it happen. Let’s create something your family will cherish forever.
